These ten disciples … forded a stream and on reaching, the other shore wanted to make sure that all of them had in fact safely crossed the stream. One of the ten began to count, but while counting the others left himself out.
“I see only nine; sure enough, we have lost one. Who can it be?” he said.
“Did you count correctly?” asked another, and did the counting himself. However, he too counted only nine.
One after the other each of the ten counted only nine, missing himself.
“We are only nine,” they all agreed, “but who is the missing one?” they asked themselves. Every effort they made to discover the “missing” individual failed.
“Whoever he is that is drowned,” said the most sentimental of the ten fools, “we have lost him.” So saying he burst into tears and the others followed suit.
Seeing them weeping on the riverbank, Devadutta enquired about the cause. They related what had happened and said that even after counting themselves several times they could find no more than nine.
On hearing the story, but seeing all the ten before him, Devadutta guessed what had happened. In order to make them know for themselves they were really ten, that all of them had survived the crossing, he told them, “Let each of you count for himself but one after the other serially, one two, three, and so on, while I shall give you each a blow so that all of you may be sure of having been included in the count, and included only once. The tenth missing man will then be found.”
Hearing this they rejoiced at the prospect of finding their “lost” disciple and accepted the method suggested by Devadutta. While Devadutta gave a blow to each of the ten in turn, he that got the blow counted himself aloud. “Ten,” said the last man as he got the last blow in his turn.
Puzzled they looked at one another, “We are ten,” they said with one voice and thanked Devadutta for having removed their grief and ignorance.
Such is the case with all of us. Truly, there is no cause for us to lose our road and be miserable and unhappy. We ourselves impose limitations on our true power, and then cry that we are not adequate. Then the mind moves all the direction without any purpose. We need to live values to make the mind mature and learn. The mature mind alone can understand the fact that we are adequate, total and full.
We are not the same who lived a couple of days before, hours before or months before. We live in a constantly changing situation. We live in a world far different from the one that we lived a few hours before. We lost the direction, a compass – a signpost that had guided us before.
Values exist deep within us. We realise fulfilment in life, when we truly get in touch with these values. We all have the ability to discover greater meaning in life. We have to get in touch with our most deeply held bedrock values and choose to live our lives in consistent with what truly matter to us.
We, as your coach and mentor, work with you in discovering the lost compass of your life. With us, you will find the meaning to your life, by being in touch with what truly matters you the most. You learn to question your thoughts and get into the source to discover your reality.
